Disabled access
In the British Embassy Stockholm we are keen to ensure that our building and services are fully accessible to disabled members of the public. Sometimes however, this is not possible due to security or other restrictions. In these situations we will endeavour to provide a service or access to a building in an alternative way to ensure equality of access for disabled people. To assist disabled visitors, we have set out below details of our disabled access. We hope this information is helpful.
General physical access
- Entrances the main reception area and Consular/Visa Section are clear and unobstructed, although there is a double door into the Consular/Visa Section which will take a little manoeuvring. A member of staff is available to assist. All visitors are required to undergo a security search;
- There are no steps and staircases into either entrance, but there is a slight raised edge at floor level at each entrance frame. Ramps are therefore not required;
- A central lift provides access to the upper floors of the Embassy building. Maximum width of the lift entrance is 79cm and therefore provides standard accessibility for wheelchair-users;
- Toilets: Wheelchair access facilities are available in Consular/Visa Section;
- Due to security requirements there are no parking facilities at the Embassy;
- Floor coverings are safe and even;
- Handrails are not currently provided in the main part of the Embassy,but support arms are fitted in Consular/Visa Section toilet facilities;
- Doors, except on the main entrances and fire doors are easily accessible to all users;
- Lighting throughout the Embassy is of a high standard;
- During an emergency or an evacuation of the building help will be provided by a member of staff;
- Intercoms are located at both entrances, and are reasonably accessible to wheelchair users.
Access for visually-impaired visitors
- Internationally recognised fire and exit signs are located throughout the building. There are currently none in Braille;
- Guide dogs are most welcome, but some notice of a visit would be welcome - just in case some members of staff are allergic to dogs.
Access for deaf/hard of hearing visitors
- Intercoms are fitted at the main reception and in Consular/Visa Section and can be adjusted for deaf/hard of hearing visitors;
- Minicom and textphones are not available; ;
- Sign language. We regret that there are currently no members of staff with a knowledge of sign language;
- Hearing dogs are most welcome, but some notice of a visit would be welcome - just in case some members of staff are allergic to dogs.
